Loose Australian opals — genuine, natural, and unset — ready to become a custom piece, join a collection, or be kept as a one-of-a-kind memento. Every stone is hand-selected in our Sydney workshop and comes with an authenticity guarantee and written appraisal on request.

The Australian varieties we cut

  • Black opal — the rarest and most valuable, with a dark body tone that makes colour blaze. Lightning Ridge, NSW.
  • White (light) opal — pale, milky body with soft colour flashes. Coober Pedy, SA.
  • Boulder opal — opal formed in Queensland ironstone, which stays as a natural dark backing.
  • Crystal opal — translucent, with colour glowing through the stone.
  • Doublet & triplet (composite) — genuine opal layered on a backing (and, for triplets, under a clear cap) to make thinner opal more durable and its colour pop.

What sets a stone’s value — body tone, brightness, play-of-colour, pattern and size (carat). We’ll talk you through each stone honestly, and our qualified gemmologist (FGAA) and valuer can appraise it.
